Exhaust resonator why




















As engineers analyzed and improved exhaust systems, they realized there were advantages to be gained in organizing and controlling these pulses and came up with the concept for the resonator.

Essentially it acts like a large echo chamber that takes the exhaust pulses and optimizes their frequencies to achieve better fuel efficiency and power production. While this helps improve power and efficiency, it also gives your vehicle its distinctive engine sound. Whether you have a Dodge pickup or a Ferrari, many cars have their own signature sounds and it all comes from exhaust resonators.

By tuning the pulses of exhaust gas to work together, it creates stronger waves of exhaust that vacuum the gas out more quickly.

By manipulating the frequency of exhaust sound waves, it can either give your car a more throaty and loud tone or silence it for smooth peaceful driving.

Resonators are often times confused for mufflers and while they may appear similar and share some of the same jobs, they play an integral part in producing optimal volume and tone from your engine. They also have an important role in the exhaust evacuating process, which helps your engine produce more power and reduce fuel consumption at the same time.

Yet that approach intrigued Hartmut Strob, the engineer who led the development of the new resonator. He eventually hit on an idea: an array of 1, microperforations 70 microns wide equivalent to two sheets of tinfoil and 2 mm long. Although tiny, they were large enough to dissipate the energy in an acoustic wave.

Yet, when gas tried to escape through them, the friction it generated created a barrier that confined the gas within the exhaust pipe. Strob began running simulations to optimize the size and shape of the array to balance noise reduction with exhaust gas retention.

His team played with different geometries and patterns, and learned how to optimize the resonator for a range of frequencies. He ultimately ended up with an array of 1, microslits. Still, the resonator screen posed material issues. Conventional exhaust systems and mufflers are made of ferritic steel, which stand up well to water, salt, and exhaust gases.

Yet they have no openings. Their design ultimately sandwiched the stainless screen inside a ferritic frame that attached to the exhaust pipe. This enabled the screen to expand and contract within without pulling free from the pipe. It proved surprisingly easy to source the screen. The food industry has been using microperforated screens as filters for decades, and knows how to make them to order.

Viewed 0. What is the Muffler? The muffler is typically located underneath your vehicle at the rear as a part of the exhaust system. It moderates and deadens exhaust sound. Mufflers have perforated tubes or baffles that form multiple chambers which exhaust gases move through. As the gas expands, the tubes reduce the volume by pushing the gases on an indirect route to exit the muffler. Some mufflers have other materials in them like fiberglass in order to help with muffling the sound.
