When the filter goes bad, it can limit the amount of fuel that enters the engine. Without fuel, the vehicle will not run at all. With that in mind, most of the symptoms of a bad fuel filter revolve around the vehicle stalling out. Fuel filters have been making a rearward progression for the last 50 years, literally. It looked like a little pill, and it would be quick and easy to replace. This was in the era of carbureted vehicles.
Fuel injection requires higher fuel pressure. Higher fuel pressure meant that a more robust fuel filter would be required. This meant the fuel filter was no longer left under the hood.
It was put in the steel fuel line, between the gas tank and engine bay. You can remove the relay by hand, but for safety purposes, use the pliers instead. Open the fuel door and remove the gas cap slowly to depressurize the fuel tank. Start the engine and allow the truck to run until it stalls out. After the engine stalls, attempt to start it back up three more times.
The engine may run again and then quickly stall. By the third attempt, however the engine will have exhausted all of the fuel pressure and any available gasoline. Disconnect the black negative cable from the battery with a socket wrench.
Locate the fuel filter on the frame rail. It will have fuel lines connected to it and look like a metal cylinder a bit bigger than a jar of baby food. To do this push in with one screwdriver on the pipe tab. Prepare a recipe to collect the leak. Remove the first and second pipe. Take out the old GMC Envoy fuel filter and insert the new one. Tighten up the clamp. Remove the caps on the fuel filter and insert the hoses back on the fuel filter.
Tighten the caps. Check for leakages and then start the engine. The location of the fuel filter can be different from one car to another, but the procedure is the same.
