A smash bag is a large bag filled with a soft foam packing. It allows golfers to hit the bag with power whilst not causing injury. Smash bags can be bought online or at golf stores but they can also be made by stuffing an old rucksack with towels. Golfers looking to improve their impact position should practice swinging into impact, hitting the bag and pausing to ensure their hands are ahead of the bag at impact. Striking down and through the ball is important and divots can give great indications of what has happened at impact.
Sorry Try Again! They hit shots that don't go where they expected, but they have no idea what they did wrong. If you are struggling with your game, you might not realize that almost every shot gives you a tool that can help you diagnose your swing problems.
That tool is the divot you leave when you hit the ball with an iron on the fairway. All you need to do is learn how to read the story divots tell. Think of your divot as an interpreter.
Ball flight is the result of swing path -- the direction you swing the clubhead -- and face angle -- where the face of the club was pointed at impact. Typically, depending on how soft the ground is, you'll get a divot two or three inches wide and a few inches long -- about the size of a dollar bill -- and no more than an inch deep.
Shallower divots will take less turf; a 3-iron, which is swung on a shallower angle, should take a smaller divot than the steeper angle of a wedge. Determine the direction in which the divot points.
It should point along your intended swing path. This is especially true if your irons are the softer, forged irons that are available.
The other issue that comes from an uneven divot shape relates to the swing. Divots that are deeper on the heel side tell you the swing was flatter. Divots with deeper on the toe side signal an over-the-top motion. A visit to see your Pro will get these swing issues fixed. Understanding how to read the direction and shape of your divots help you self-diagnose what happened with a shot. In his time at Blacklake, Rudi devoted much of his time to running tournaments and other activities in order to create a social atmosphere at the club. Since returning to North Carolina, Rudi has worked with the First Tee of the Triangle helping to instill life skills and core values through the game of golf to local youth. How to Read Your Divots. Read Your Divots There are 2 main swing types in terms of divots, sweepers and diggers. Divot Direction The direction of your divot is the line running back to front and its relation to your intended target line.
So instead of trying to help it into the air, your goal should be to hit down on the ball and compress it. This will get that little white ball airborne and create a solid divot. The best golfers all have the low point of their swing in front of the golf ball. This means they hit the ball first, and then their club will guide through the turf. Usually, inconsistent iron shots are very frustrating and make you search for the little white ball in the deep rough or bunker, instead of the green.
They tend to result in either fat shots that end up way short or thin misses that sail over the green. Every golfer should be striving for a consistent bottom of the arc on every iron shot. This is a primary component in a repeatable swing that will dramatically help you improve ball striking.
While this mostly pertains to your wedges and irons, it also applies to almost every shot from the deck. Now that you have a better understanding of why you create divots, next up is understanding what is the right type of divot for each club. In general, you should have a larger divot with shorter clubs like wedges. For example, if you have a wedge into the green, the piece of grass should be much bigger than a 6-iron.
A great example on tour is Sergio Garcia. While his on course antics make him hard to watch for some people, his game is still something to admire, especially with his wedges and irons. He creates some of the best divots in golf because he is able to come in at the right angle and hit beautiful, spinny wedges on the green. So what is the perfect size for each golf shot? As I mentioned, each one tells a story for every golf shot.
A good divot starts just in front of the ball at rest. This means your club struck the ball then the ground.
